The Insectigator encourages families to go outside and investigate wildlife and the natural world we live in. Created for beginning entomologists (8 thru 11 years old), it can also be used with younger youth with an adult. Anyone who has an interest in insects is encouraged to use this manual, regardless of age. Educators working in a classroom will find the national school standards in science and language arts listed in each activity. Activities introduce youth to entomology and the insect’s role within our environment. The final activity relates to careers in entomology. Clubs can use the manual and contents for club activities or project demonstrations. Youth are encouraged to do their investigation in groups and share their findings with other club members. Some activities are used as fair projects in addition to or in place of insect collections. Youth are also encouraged to do their investigation in groups or as individuals or with family members and friends. It is recommended and used by Henry Doorly Zoo in all formal and informal programs. The manual provides an opportunity to experience scientific investigation firsthand.

The Wonderwise 4-H Project is a series of informal science education activities designed for use in 4-H clubs, camps, and special interest programs. Judy Sakanari, Ph.D., visits fish markets in search of worms and other parasites harmful to marine animals and humans. She takes her “catch” back to the lab and conducts experiments on the live worms inside the fish. Her work with parasites helps scientists understand how these “guests” survive inside another animal without being digested and expelled.
