This project is designed to teach young people how to write their own original cowboy poetry, but also to expose youth to some of the classic cowboy and cowgirl poets, especially those from the West. In this project, youth also learn about the importance of diversity, history of cattle drives, how to read and interpret brands, and explore the fascinating profiles of Native American cowboys. It won the Dorothy Howard Educational Award in 2006 from the American Folklore Society. In this project, youth-- - Learn how to enhance their public speaking skills - Improve their public presentation and performance skills - Gain a greater appreciation for local history and Western culture - Develop a sense of Western pride and pride in rural lifestyles - Cultivate a greater sense of the importance of everyday living - Learn how to preserve an oral history of their own family life - Enjoy working with words and writing original art. This project is self-paced so that youth can learn at their own rate. However, in order to complete this project, youth are expected to be able to do the following: - Set their goals and record project highlights - Complete the required activities Sections 1-3 of the youth manual. - Write at least 3 original poems composed of at least four-line stanzas. - Demonstrate a specific rhyme pattern in their own original verse. In addition, youth should complete at least 3 of these activities: - Show someone else how to write cowboy poetry based on what they have learned. - Exhibit something at a county fair - Do a community service project - Perform their original poetry in some public setting (a club meeting, project meeting, local gathering, Lion's Club meeting or other public places). - Interview a local poet. - Collect examples of local folk poetry from your library. - Participate in a cowboy poetry writing workshop or project meeting. - Search out and identify cowboy poetry resources on the web. - Attend a local or regional cowboy poetry gathering.
