Description
Quilt Quest is a comprehensive curriculum designed to inspire youth ages 10 - 19 to enter and pursue the world of quilts and quilt making. More than a book filled with activities, it is a resource teaching about all aspects of quilts and quiltmaking. Written to address school standards in reading and math, Quilt Quest has been used by school teachers and the more traditional 4-H delivery systems equally well. The curriculum is supported by a website: http://www.quiltquest.unl.edu. The two hundred eighty three page full-color Quilt Quest curriculum is divided into 5 chapters or -blocks- which each have a range of experience levels. Chapter one, "The Starting Block" deals with the basics, answering the question -What is a quilt?- and presents examples of basic equipment and techniques used in quilt making. Chapter two, "Design the Block" helps youth discover how quilters use the basic elements and principles of design in their quilts and how they too can design harmonious quilts. In chapter three, "Build the Block" the basic and more advanced techniques used to create a quilt from piecing through applique are featured. A unique unit not found in many quilt publications is chapter four, "Preserve the Block" which teaches about ways to care for and conserve quilts and other textiles. In this chapter, youth learn about yarn structures to help identify fibers found in quilts, and the best way to handle and store textile items. Finally, in chapter 5, "Beyond the Block", products based on the concept "quilt" are presented.
